State wide hunt closes earlier the scheduled.

Zone 3, which is the last remaining open zone, is scheduled to be closed Dec 23rd at 5pm.
This will officially bring the statewide wolf hunt to a close two months ahead of schedule.

According to Kurt Thiede, DNR Lands Division Administrator, Zone 3 harvests slowed after deer hunting closed but then it picked up again. The season is being closed with zone 3 reaching 17 harvested wolves instead the posted 18 to prevent over harvest.

As fast as the quota was met just indicates a much healthier wolf population than what was first thought. I can see where there will be more tags issued in the next few years. I've seen it with fishers when they were re-introduced. Give it a couple years and they will have a better idea of how many are really out there. I'm sure its quite a few more than the 800 they claim now.

Duane, there are not too many places we have called coyotes that we didn't see wolf tracks.
I think they need to get the deer counters to count wolfs, there seems to be problems with both sets of numbers.
