I'm wondering whats going on behind the scenes of this years hunt also. I cannot believe the way the daily numbers fluctuate up down this year compared last year.
So far this year, Zone 1 ...even after it was closed has bounced back and from from 33 to 39 many times with it's harvest totals.
For those of you following our facebook page , the stats are posted daily and you can scroll down and see the fluctuation. It is really suspicious looking lol

I didn't think the zones would close in the first couple of days either , but I did invest a lot in traps and calls and decoys. After my zones closed I started scouting out areas to move to. Then they closed. This is total BS ! I made several trips up north to the different zones to scout and hunt and trap in only to have them shut dow, I don't think I'm going to bother scouting out the last 2 zones. Really makes me mad I went through all the trouble of getting my trappers safety , buy traps , learn how to boil and wax them ( for he sole purpose of the wolf hunt ) only to have it shut down before I could get up there. I have all but given up on deer hunting because of all the BS that went along with it. So over the years I went from hunter safety in structure to just a bird hunter. Really sad to think there are more out there like me. The DNR better get their shit together if they want to keep their jobs.

Dave MacFarland, large carnivore specialist for DNR was quoted in a recent AP article that the percentage of wolves trapped was 85% 2014, 70% 2013, and 52% in 2012. Wolf tag holders in WI are getting out earlier now that everyone knows the season will be short. 10 tags are issued for every wolf in the statewide quota, that is a lot of competition for a canis lupus.

I'm starting to think the 10 to 1 ratio may be too much competition, the quota allowances are too low, and/or the tag prices are too high. I don't know. I feel for the guy that described all the time and $ he invested and basically didn't get a legite chance at a wolf. A lot of people didn't even get all their traps out, some none at all. I'm not sure what the answer is, but it kind of seems that too much goes into the preparation for that to happen to people.

Last weekend came across 4 sets of fresh tracks and a still steaming pile of you know what on Saturday morning while hunting on private land in Zone 5. They had been digging in an exposed sand hillside. Did not had any wolves on camera since July. Everyone I have talked to agrees the official DNR estimated population is too low. This results in a kill quota that is too low. Has anyone participated in the DNR wolf track survey program? If we find and document more tracks, DNR would have to raise the quota, right?

We have a very similar situation, I thought I would have had a couple of weeks to hunt and now that I got a trappers license I could put out a few traps too.
Every where I went when I mention I have a wolf tag I am asked to hunt their land or they give me a number to call for someone that has them hanging around there house or killing their dogs.
I thought we had a lot of wolves in north central WI but I'm finding a lot more in central WI and I have everyone going out of their way to help me out. I was even told I was being treated like a god (small g of course ;) ) and I was thinking that myself.
I guess shooting handgun silhouettes around the state has helped me get to know a lot of good people that have been helping me get places to hunt. Just wish I could get them to come in so I could get a shot. I have found I need to be up in a tree so I can see them coming. I called in a pack of yotes on Saturday and never would have seen them from the ground.
I'm heading back up today and see if I can fill one of the eleven tags that are left in zone six.
I had a couple that were glad to see the wolves introduced tell me they think someone, probably a kid will get killed by a wolf in the near future. There is a reason people shot them when they saw them back in the good old days.
I'm finding I was too uneducated about many things for this hunt and will have to do a lot more homework if I get another tag.
