I made it up to zone four on Thursday to find rain, same for Friday and Saturday but I still got out and made some sets to call. Never saw anything and when I got in on Saturday I see the zone will close on Sunday at 6:30 with only four taken with a 'goal' of eight.
I spent the time and money to take the home trapping course, Thanks Mike for making that possible, figuring on mainly calling at first and getting some traps out to help my chances after a few days. Well I never got a chance to set a trap.
Now I have to find somewhere to hunt to fill my tag, don't know if I will apply for another one if this is what it will be like in the future. I have gone from a patrons license to just a small game. If I want to big game hunt I prefer to spend my money in WY or out west where the Game and Fish treat you better, like a hunter not a criminal and work towards your success not for an insurance company or animal right crazies.
This should probably be a separate post but it seems the wolves have saved Yellowstone NP from disaster. themetapicture.com/when-they-brought-these-wolves/ Not sure if we will ever survive without wolves, well the makers of the video think that way???

Great question, I wish I had an answer, but all I have are more questions. I traveled to Zone 5 Friday expecting to have most of this week to try and tag out. I knew from previous years it was going to be a short season when I drew the tag. I intended to take the trapping course, scout during the summer, and get on them early, but life (son's travel baseball) got in the way. At least I got some exercise hiking and calling this weekend. It is really disappointing that the season is closed already in my favorite areas. So, what happened?

Up for discussion:

Are the wolf population estimates used to determine quotas way too low? Were the quotas unfairly low? Are the hunters and trappers that much more effective after a few seasons of experience? All of the above?

The Lake Winnebago sturgeon spear fishing season ends quickly many years, but at least you can get a tag every year!

Still curious, the wolves you know of, were they taken on private or public land?

I wonder if the counters are giving low numbers to keep the hunting permits low? Wouldn't be the first time a 'science study' was falsified to obtain favorable results.
I suppose the trappers get better with experience like many other things. I have a lot of respect for all the 'outdoor' knowledge they have.
I don't know anyone that got a tag or a wolf.

All good questions. Hard to figure out. I was in zone 5 and didn't even get all my traps out and then the season was closed. I knew it would go quick, but wow!
I suspect some hard brainstorming will have to take place after this season. There must be more wolves than the scientists initially thought. It's kind of a bummer for those that spent so much time and money preparing, only to have so many zones close in 3-5 days.
I'm not sure if they'll ever announce the private vs. public land kill ratio.
I'm surprised more people aren't using this website this year.
I had some crazy action this weekend. Something pulled out of my MB-650. I think it may have been a bear, I wish I knew. It scratched up the pan, and the top of the jaw, and kicked 1 of my half log backings 3 feet away. Based on the scratches on the trap, it didn't appear to be a toe catch. No hair was left, and the ground wasn't tore up.

Looks like you had a digger. If there is the slightest bit of scent on the trap the critters will dig them up every time. I typically have 2 sets of gloves that I use when setting canine traps. One set for handling the trap and one set for handling the bait. Did you boil and wax your traps?

Anythings possible.
I boiled and waxed everything, and I used separate gloves.
If it was a digger by chance, maybe I didn't place enough dirt over the pan.
Bummer either way. Besides, not knowing what happened or what I had kind of irks me. You know the feeling I imagine.
