The state's wolf harvest will officially end at 5 p.m. Monday, according to a news release from the state Department of Natural Resources.

The timing of the end of the season depends on how many animals are harvested. Most of the state already had closed to wolf hunting and trapping, when quotas were met. The final region open to wolf hunting, known as Zone 3, had a quota of 71 wolves. On Saturday, the total reached 64, according to the DNR.

Zone 3 is in the northwest portion of the state and includes portions of Burnett, Washburn, Rusk and Taylor counties.

"This has been a successful second season, and the harvest was well distributed across the state. We are closing the wolf season now to reduce the risk of exceeding our quota," Kurt Thiede, DNR Land Division administrator, said in a statement.

Any wolves harvested before 5 p.m. Monday must be called in within 24 hours at 1-855-299-9653, the release says.
