Now that we have snow in zone 6, I think I'd like to get out and do some calling. I'm well set up w/ calls for 'yote hunting, but would like to add a wolf howler to my arsenal. Any suggestions? I've heard good things about the Wolf Howler Wolf Call by E.L.K. Inc. and some feedback on the Alpha Howler by Rocky Mountain Hunting Calls. They're the only 2 I've heard of. Both appear to have certain advantages. At least 1 of them appears to do more than just make wolf how sounds and can be slightly tricky to operate.
Thanks
Ps. I'm still trying to trap too, although I need to learn how to set traps in the snow. I didn't plan on having snow for wolf season, so didn't study up on how to set a MB-650 in the snow!

I moved this out of the Welcome forum and created a new topic for it aellingson.
I've have an E.L.K. howler that I use for coyotes that I absolutely love it. There's a trick to getting it mastered but as far as I'm concerned it's the most realistic sounding with it's latex diaphragm. It can be used for wolves also, by repositioning the diaphragm to make the howl deeper.

Richard Cronk, Cronk Predator Calls, who passed a way a couple years ago made the second best Wolf howler in my opinion. If you can find one it'd be well worth the investment. They were made from cow horns with a plastic reed on them.

I bought the E.L.K. (the Wolf model) howler. Now I have to figure out how to make the appropriate sounds w/ it :)

I always found that slobbering mine up made it work better. :P
I'd lick the top of the band a few times and get it good and wet before I howled.

I also like the ELK Power Howler and sometimes I use the wood 'horn' from my Dan Thompson call stuffed into it and it lowers the tone and seems to be louder too. Mine has been modified with a cow horn and has an old PM pin removed due to disagreement with that forum. :) I've called in a few wolves with it alone with a lot of coyotes.
